A.L. Breguet founded his company in 1775 and shortly thereafter became an official supplier to the French Royal family. A.L. Breguet invents the first self-winding watch, first minute repeater, and the first tourbillon. A.L. Breguet utilized moon phase perpetual calendars, and invented the hinged “half-hunter” with the help of Napoleon. The owners of the Parisian Jewelers Chaumet company resurrected Breguet in the 1980s. Breguet was later sold to The Swatch Group.
Breguet is known mostly for their “round” cases, the “Classique” the “Marine” and the all new and improved “Type XXI” series. For the women’s lines; the “Queen of Naples” has taken the watch world by storm. When The Swatch Group bought Breguet in 1999, many Breguet production pieces filtered into the grey market as prices crashed. Breguet became a close-out brand. Swatch then lowered the Retail Price and prices crashed even more. It took nearly 5 years for most of the remnants of that inventory to disappear.
The Breguet market is very strong currently. The sports editions, the “Type XXI” and “Marine II” are hot. All “Classique” complicated watches and tourbillions are also in short supply. Next to Patek, Vacheron, and AP, Breguet is considered to be part of the most prestigious Top 4 Swiss Watch Makers.
